NTRNZ Creative heads to MIPCOM with two new factual titles for the international market: YLE Original series Cold Frontier – NATO Prepares for War and Aerial Arctic, both distributed by TVF International.
With the new launches, NTRNZ’s European Arctic factual slate grows to approximately 100 hours and 170 episodes – from defence, history, and geopolitics to wilderness culture, survival, and outdoor life.
Cold Frontier – NATO Prepares for War
What happens if Russia attacks NATO’s northern border?
Cold Frontier – NATO Prepares for War takes audiences inside the new reality of Arctic defence, as NATO and allied forces prepare for conflict in one of Europe’s most strategically important regions.
The six-part documentary series follows major NATO military exercises in Northern Finland, Sweden and Norway, with rare access to the people, operations and environments behind Europe’s northern defence. The series goes inside multinational exercises involving the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines and European NATO Allies – on land, at sea and in the air.
At the heart of the series are former peacekeepers and long-time friends Ville Sormunen and Wille Koskenvesa of Mighty Finland.
Mighty Finland’s long-standing relationships with the Finnish Defence Forces, NATO and allied forces are backed by NTRNZ Creative’s track record in internationally successful military history documentaries Untold Arctic Wars I & II. Together, this credibility has opened doors rarely accessible to television cameras.
The result is an on-the-ground view of Arctic security, complemented by insights from leading Arctic defence and geopolitical experts from the Nordics and the United States, at a moment when the High North has moved to the centre of global attention.
“Access is everything in a series like this. Cold Frontier takes audiences into places they rarely get to see – and brings them close to the people preparing for a security reality that is changing fast. Together, these perspectives offer an eye-opening view of how the High North is defended.
For us, this is a story from home. We live and work in the North, and right now the eyes of the world are turning here,” says NTRNZ Creative Executive Director Teemu Hostikka.
Sam Joyce, Senior Acquisitions Manager at TVF International, says the new series builds on the companies’ long-standing partnership:
“We are very excited to launch Cold Frontier at the market. As soon as NTRNZ came to us with the project, we knew it would be something truly innovative. Combining unprecedented access to military strategy and training exercises with an on-the-ground, immersive experience that brings viewers inside NATO’s preparations, it is exactly the kind of format that makes important geopolitical themes accessible, engaging and exciting for viewers.
With Europe’s security currently dominating international headlines, this is exactly the right time to be bringing the series to buyers at MIPCOM next month.”
Cold Frontier – NATO Prepares for War will premiere in early 2027.
We knew there was a global appetite to uncover the secrets of the Arctic region, and that no one is better placed than NTRNZ to bring these stories to the global stage.

Introducing Aerial Arctic in MIPCOM
NTRNZ Creative is also launching Aerial Arctic, a three-part aerial documentary series capturing the European Arctic through three dramatic seasonal transformations: Nightless Night, Polar Night and Autumn Colours.
The series marks NTRNZ Creative’s first co-production with TVF International, as well as its first series to be fully financed internationally.
“We are delighted to be extending our long-term partnership with NTRNZ on these two new projects. Following the international success of Untold Arctic Wars Series 1 & 2, we knew there was a global appetite to uncover the secrets of the Arctic region, and that no one is better placed than NTRNZ to bring these stories to the global stage”, says Sam Joyce, Senior Acquisitions Manager at TVF International.
Shot entirely from above, Aerial Arctic reveals a landscape transformed by months of darkness, endless summer daylight and the intense colours of the short Arctic autumn.
The series has already been picked by major European broadcasters ahead of its MIPCOM launch.
100 hours. 7 Series. 170 episodes. One Arctic Slate.
